New Plant-Based Plastic Body
Bodies made of plant-based “Ecodear” plastic: the world’s first application of this material in a musical instrument.
Improved instrument performance
The change in material has resulted in a mellow, centered tone that is similar to that of wood recorders, plus improved breath response and high-register control.
Newly adopted plant-like colors
Bright colors chosen to elicit the image of plants such as corn and others have been used in the recorders and cases for the first time.
Plant-based plastic “Ecodear”
"Ecodear" plastic is a plant-based material created by combining polylactic acid (PLA)* derived from plants with other materials through an original Toray polymer alloy process, achieving characteristics that are similar to conventional oil-based resins.
* Plant-based PLA Compound Resin Plant-based PLA compound resin is produced from plant starch (corn is the main ingredient currently used) via a process that includes lactic acid fermentation and polymerization.
The "Ecodear" used in the YRS-401 and YRS-402B recorders is a compound of polylactic acid and ABS resin (3:7 ratio) that has about the same workability, durability, strength, and appearance as conventional ABS resin,
“Ecodear” is a safe material that has been used in home appliances, office equipment, and a variety of other items.
Artist Comment: Kuricorder Quartet
“The ‘pop’ colors are great! The weight is right for a musical instrument, and the tone is seriously musical too. The resistance is comfortable, and you can play hard. Notes in the high register are particularly easy to produce. Note definition is good and tonguing is easy. The notes have a well-defined center. This soprano recorder plays beautifully. There is very little variation from instrument to instrument, so these will be great for recording unison parts. The fact that just changing the material has resulted in such a noticeable improvement highlights the depth of the recorder as a musical instrument. The improvement in the rate of development of children who start with these recorders is likely to be significant."
German and Baroque fingering systems
Yamaha offers a choice of either “German” or “Baroque” fingering systems on many models to accommodate local preferences and traditions. YRS-401: German system YRS-402B: Baroque system

Yamaha has just released the first addition to their series of plastic recorders in almost twenty years: their new 400 Series Plastic Recorders are identical in acoustical design to their present 300 series, but the new models are being made of a new composite material named Ecodear, which consists of 70% ABS plastic resin and 30% plant-based resin — all previous models have been made of 100% ABS plastic. These new instruments are yellow in color and similar to boxwood in appearance, with white imitation ivory trim similar to that in the 300 series instruments. In addition to being more ecologically friendly, the new recorders have a tone quality that is somewhat more like a wooden recorder. The first instrument in this new series, the Model 402B soprano, is now in stock at ASW and is priced in between the original brown plastic YRS-302B and the newer woodgrain-finish YRS-312B and YRS-314B models.
